Getting Set Up
- Webspace
- To make a webpage on the internet, there are many things that must take place. First off, you must get webspace. There are many places which will host you for free, and even more that will charge you fees for hosting your webpage. If you are looking for a free server, I suggest www.FortuneCity.com. I work for this server as a "minister" (a volunteer who helps to keep the service in order) and it has agreat community where you can meet many online friends. Just follow the directions once there to get 20 free megabytes of space to host your webpage with. You will NOT need to use anywhere close to this amount, but it miht come in handy to back up small files on your computer ;-)
- FTP Client
- Once you have signed up for webspace, you will need a way to transfer files from your hard drive to the online server. You can use FortuneCity's online File Manager to move files and create new ones, but an FTP (File Transfer Protocal) client can be used if the File Manager will not work with your browser, or if there is a problem with it. An FTP client is an application that will connect you to an FTP server and let you upload to your webspace. Two nice FTP clients that I reccomend are: (Click to Download)
For more information on how to use an FTP Client with FC, and how to use the File Manager, see the FortuneCity FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), and any help files that come with your application.
- Editor
- And of course, all these applications and webspace would be useless if you dont don't have a webpage. To make a webpage for the first time, you will most likely want to use a "What You See Is What You Get" editor, which is often shortened to WISSYWIG. (Pronounced as spelled: "Wissy-wig") This is a very simple way to make a webpage because you can edit it visually, as apposed to coding it yourself. (Though this is harder, it will in most cases yeild better results) For a more advanced user, see the Programing/Editing section. Two excelent WISSYWIG editors are: (Click to Download)
Once you have these open, follow the instructions or see the below section.
Programming
Now that you are all set up, you will need to make a webpage.
- It's My First Time to make a webpage
- So its your first time to make a webpage. Lets start by telling you basically what a webpage is. A webpage is a sort of collague, including a collection of graphics and text. When you are loading a webpage, you are loading the text and uaually many different seperate images. All that a webpage does is hold the text and tell the browser where to display the images. For this simple lesson, lets make a VERY simple webpage. Start by launching your WISSYWIG editor. Once you are in a new document, put in some text saying "Welcome to my First Webpage" or something equivilently newbie sounding. ;-) Now press return so you are on a new line. Next, we will want to find a graphic that you would like to put on your webpage. Most likely, you will want to use another image you have found on the internet. To get one, first find your image. Once you see it in your browser, we will want to save it to your hard drive. To do this on a Windows based machine, right click the image and drag down on the menu to "Save Image As..." or similar wording, and release. For a mac, you will click and hold on the image until a menu pops up, then drag down to "Save Image As..." or similar wording and release. Once you release, you will be prompted with a dialog box asking you to save the file. Save the image to the same folder as you will save your webpage. Now that you have your graphic, look up in the help file of your WISSYWIG editor on how to add a graphic, as it varies from program to program. Follow these instructions and add your picture to the webpage. Now it is time to save the HTML file (Hyper Text Markup Language). If you have a PC (Win based platform) then you will need to save it as "index" as Pc's naturally add in the correct extension. If you have a mac, you will want to save the file as "index.html" even though macintoshes do not use visible file extensions, the internet does, and it is necesary to have the correct file extension. Now that you have created and saved your HTML file, it now comes time to use the other two set up items. Open up your FTP client or the File Manager (remember, see the FAQ for instructions on both) and connect you FTP client to FortuneCity. Now, you will want to upload your TWO files to the internet. You must upload both these files for your graphic to work. Once you have uploaded your page, go to the address which was given to you when you signed up to FortuneCity, and go there, and you should see you webpage. If you want to play around and use a background color or picture, and change the fonts and colors, see your editor's help file.
